Sandersville Teacher Opts for Biking to Work

This summer, Mike Shelton decided he would change up his commute to Sandersville Elementary, where he teaches third grade. So he bought a new bike and now encourages his students to stay active and go green, too.

“As educators, our main focus is academics, but really we are here to teach the full student. Modeling sustainability and healthy life choices is a big part of that,” he said.

Shelton points out there are other ways to do life than what today’s children are used to, such as driving around Lexington. “Try biking or walking instead, or maybe even ride a bus,” he said.

The city of Lexington has a bike safety program for second and third graders, and Shelton looks forward to their coming to Sandersville this year. It’s part of the big picture idea – that students can find ways to stay healthy and have a positive impact on our community by doing simple things.

“An active lifestyle can benefit you in lots of ways, whether it’s biking to work or biking for fun or joining a sport – getting out and taking care of your body is a big part of launching into this world in a healthy way,” he said.
