Sandersville Earns State’s Purple Star Award

Sandersville Earns State’s Purple Star Award

Sandersville Elementary is the first school in FCPS to receive Kentucky’s Purple Star Award of Military Distinction for their support and advocacy of military-connected families. This honor recognizes that Sandersville makes sure they have systems in place for students who have family members on active duty, in the National Guard, or as veterans.

The school’s Family Resource Center coordinator, Damon Sexton, spearheaded the efforts to gain Purple Star status, which is renewed every two years. The process included staff training about the needs of military youth, establishment of a landing page on the school’s website with targeted resources and school liaisons for military families, and demonstration of military-related programming at Sandersville.

Superintendent Demetrus Liggins praised Sandersville’s commitment. “I am grateful for your leadership and initiative, and I appreciate the thoughtful steps you took to make this possible,” he said. “Thank you for representing our FCPS so well and for ensuring all students and families feel seen, supported, and valued.”
